High School Mock Trial
Launched in 1982, the New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s annual Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition has become a shining example of how legal and education communities come together to provide interactive learning experiences for high school students outside of the classroom. Using an original case the NJSBF’s Mock Trial Committee prepares, student teams take on the roles of attorneys, witnesses and jurors. The program helps students develop skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork.
The New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s High School Mock Trial Competitions provide an interactive educational experience that enhances students’ writing, speaking and analytical skills as they learn about the justice system. NJSBF Mock Trial Competitions are free and open to students in public, private, charter and home schools in New Jersey.

2026 High School Mock Trial Champions
On March 25, Princeton Day School of Mercer County won the state title, defeating Mendham High School of Morris County, which placed second. The Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science of Ocean County placed third and served as jurors for the final round. Awards were also presented to winners of this year’s Courtroom News Reporter and Courtroom Artist competitions.
Princeton Day School will represent New Jersey at the National High School Mock Trial Championship this May in Iowa.
Presiding over the championship round, once again, was New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner and Hon. Marilyn C. Clark (Ret.), on Judicial Recall in the Criminal Division, Passaic County.
This year, 214 teams (more than 3,000 students) from around the state participated in the NJSBF 2025-2026 Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition.
In addition, 78 talented student artists entered this year’s Courtroom Artist Contest by sketching a mock trial team in action during the county mock trial contests, and 27 students entered the Courtroom News Reporter competition where students covered county mock trials.
The New Jersey State Bar Foundation thanks all students, teachers, mock trial coaches, attorney volunteers, judges and county coordinators who participated and made this year’s competition such a success.

In Memorium ~ Vincent J. Apruzzese, Esq. 1928 – 2024
Vincent J. Apruzzese, Esq., the namesake of our High School Mock Trial Competition, was an icon in the legal industry in New Jersey. He was a past president of the New Jersey State Bar Association and led the drive to build the New Jersey Law Center. He regularly attended the state championship finals of the competition, which was named in his honor many years ago, and personally congratulated each of the students participating. As the first chairman of the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and its Public Education Committee, he was dedicated to the implementation of free, law-related education programs for the public, and particularly for young people. His legacy lives on in the success of this competition.
